Coltman Trench official launch!
Wednesday, 26th March 2014
Today saw the official re-opening of the Staffordshire Regiment Museum’s superb World War I trench system, one of the best in the country. It has been renamed the Coltman Trench, after William Harold Coltman VC, MM & Bar, DCM & Bar of the North Staffordshire Regiment – a stretcher bearer who was the most decorated other rank of World War I. The trench is a wonderful chance to get an insight into what life was like for soldiers serving on the Western Front during the Great War. This 500ft trench system contains ‘scrape’ holes, dugout, gun positions and even a tunnel, used during the period to undermine the enemy trenches that were often just a short way away. Also new are state-of-the-art sound effects and informative panels.
To get the full experience, the Museum is running WW1 Discovery Days for families throughout 2014, taking place on all bank holidays, every Monday during School Half Term Holidays and every Monday during School Summer Holidays
