Zeppelin raid on Burton-on-Trent

Zeppelin Raid over Burton-on-Trent

In 1916 Burton- on-Trent was bombed during a zeppelin raid.

Professor Carl Chinn and Mike Powis have both researched and written articles on the raid. The house in the picture is thought to be 109 Shobnall Street. Harriet Worthington of 108 Shobnall Street took her two children – Mary aged 11 and George aged 6 – next door to 109 when the bombing started. Another local lady – Jane Wilson aged 23 – also went there to see a friend. A bomb from the zeppelin hit the back of the house which collapsed with a number of people being buried in the rubble. They were dug out by a rescue party but George and Mary Worthington, and Jane Wilson were killed.

At the age of seven Oliver Sutton was staying with relatives and experienced the raid. In 1984 he spoke to an interviewer about his memories.
