The Hospital in the Oatfield
This exhibition of ten paintings by the French artist Victor Tardieu, recently acquired by the Florence Nightingale Museum, provides a new perspective on the role played by women volunteers in France and Belgium during the First World War.
The paintings are a record of the volunteer hospital run by Millicent, Duchess of Sutherland at Bourbourg near Dunkirk in the summer of 1915. The Hospital in the Oatfield was only in existence for three months and the paintings mark a significant period of military nursing.
